Casa Italia

Inspired by historic city signage in the city of Milan, these typefaces were created as a personal type exploration after a study abroad trip through Italy. Each font is derived from a different sign in the city. “Acquario Nouveau” was extracted from the signage on the Acquario Civico (Milan Aquarium), a building constructed during the Art Nouveau period. “Casa Italia” was inspired by fascist lettering on a column at the entrance to the Casa della Fontana. “Componibile,” Italian for modular, is a modular typeface which was expanded from a dry cleaner’s shop sign. For each sign, letter characteristics were studied and a sort of grid system was made that contributed to the rest of the letterforms.
